Hirah (Hīra هيرح) was the capital city of the Lakhmids (al-Lakhmiyyūn اللخميون).  It was an Arab cosmopolitan city teaming with palaces, churches, and monasteries. The ruins of this magnificent town can be seen near the present-day Najaf.1
